Nothing gets the party started like vodka watermelon jellies!

It’s the first week back at work and it’s making me nostalgic for the holidays already! I had such a great break hanging out in Queensland up at the beach, and I’m wishing that I was back there! So I decided that because I can’t be back there right now, that I would instead write a blog post about one of the things I made on my holidays to bring in the new year!

For New Year’s we had some friends over to the beach, and decided that we wanted to recreate something that we did for new year’s a couple of years ago that really got the party going! There’s nothing like an alcoholic beverage with a twist! When we made them two years ago it was really popular and they only lasted about half an hour, and given this track record we figured it was about time we brought it back!

Enter the vodka jelly watermelon! This is by far the coolest jelly shot I’ve ever had or made, because it’s actually in the shape of watermelon pieces! It’s also really easy to make if you have a whole watermelon on hand, and such a fun thing to have at a party. Seriously if you’re trying to get a party going, this is your ticket. Everyone loves the novelty of these little watermelon pieces, and even if they don’t taste like watermelon, they are still a lot of fun!

A word of warning though, these shots are not for the faint hearted as they are really alcoholic! You can really taste the vodka if you put the full amount in, so you really only need a couple per person if you don’t want people getting too rowdy. But they are a really fun addition to any party that I can guarantee people will love.

Ingredients
  • One large watermelon
  • 4 cups of vodka we used a mixture of normal and vanilla
  • 4 boxes of red jelly we used raspberry flavoured jelly but you could use any
  • 56 grams of unflavoured gelatin powder
  • 4 cups of boiling water
Instructions
  1. Cut your watermelon in half lengthways and spoon out the inside until you have a pretty even layer around the outside of the watermelon (you can use the inside for cocktails so save this for later).
  2. Place each half in a tray with a bed of paper towel around the edges to stop each half from moving around too much.
  3. In a large bowl, add the jelly and gelatin together and pour in the boiling water. Whisk for 2 minutes, or until all the gelatin has dissolved.
  4. Add the 4 cups of vodka, and whisk to combine.
  5. Pour the whole vodka jelly mix into the two halves of the watermelon evenly, ensuring you use all of the mix.
  6. Place both halves of the watermelon in the refrigerator, and leave in there until the jelly is completely set. This should take about 4-5 hours, but we left it overnight.
  7. When you’re ready to serve, take the watermelon halves out of the fridge. Slice into 3-5 cm pieces crosswise, and then cut these big slices into 2-3 smaller wedges.
  8. Keep the pieces in the fridge until you are ready to serve. Serve on a platter and ensure you don’t leave in the sun.

And that’s all there is to it, I told you it was easy! Just like making jelly, only more fun! This take on jello shots is awesome, especially as you get these super wobbly but strong pieces of jelly watermelon out of them. They are sure to be a hit at any party, especially in the summer by the pool or the beach!

Although these are quite strong, they are actually pretty tasty. And I feel like these sorts of things need to be strong otherwise what’s the point, right? You really only need a couple per person, although I know they were a bigger hit with some more than others at our party! Needless to say they were gone pretty quickly given how fun they are to eat!

With such an easy recipe for such great results, why not try these for your next get together? They are a fun take on cocktails or other jello shots, and super simple to make! You won’t be disappointed with these ones, and your guests will thank you for them!

Until next time, happy eating!
