My roommate aka best friend and I have started a little Saturday morning ritual which I decided it would be nice to share with you all this week. Now that it’s gotten a little warmer, my craving for smoothie bowls has increased exponentially. I love a good acai bowl, it reminds me of being back in Brisbane. For some reason, they just aren’t as big in Melbourne. Perhaps it is the weather, but it seems to be something that is a little harder to come by down here. I mean, you can buy them on most café menus, but only if you are willing to pay upwards of $16 for them. It makes me sad that there isn’t a wide variety of acai bowl cafes that have affordable options.
So in a bid to save money, but also enjoy smoothie bowls as they are delicious, we’ve started making them at home. There’s something about starting a Saturday morning with a delicious, fresh smoothie bowl. Especially if you’ve had a couple of wines the night before! I love how you can really customise them to whatever you have on hand, or what you are craving at the time. It’s funny how this always seems to result in me putting a big dollop of peanut butter on the top! You know me, I am a peanut butter fiend.
I feel like over the past few weeks we’ve really got our recipe down pat, and so I wanted to share it on the blog, because I really enjoy this breakfast! I can’t really take credit at all for the smoothie bowl method. My bestie is the smoothie extraordinaire. But I feel that my input with toppings and ingredients has made it a real joint effort, but she is in charge of the blending that makes the magic happen. A big thanks to her for showing me the way of making these delicious smoothie bowls at home, saving me money! She will help me reduce my spend on food if it kills her.
The great thing about this recipe is that you can customise it easily to whatever you have on hand. Once you have the basics down pat, it’s really up to you what you add in to make it yours. The below is just how we like to do it when we’re craving some fruity goodness on a Saturday morning.
- 2 cups of frozen mixed berries
- 3-5 frozen strawberries
- 2 overripe bananas
- 750 ml of water
- 1 teaspoon of spirulina powder
- 4 teaspoons of chocolate buckinis
- 4 tablespoons of coconut chips
- 2 teaspoons of honey
- 2 tablespoons of peanut butter
-
Add the frozen mixed berries, strawberries, bananas, water and spirulina powder to a blender.
-
Blend to combine ingredients until completely smooth. Add a little more water if the ingredients aren’t blending, but not too much as otherwise it will become too watery.
-
Once your smoothie is blended, pour equal amounts into two bowls.
-
Top each bowl with 2 teaspoons of buckinis, 2 tablespoons of coconut chips, and a tablespoon of peanut butter. Drizzle 1 teaspoon of honey over the top (if it drizzles, otherwise dollop).
-
Serve immediately.
And that’s really all there is to it. Such a simple recipe, but I promise you that it hits the spot. We started adding in the spirulina powder to give us an extra nutrient boost for the weekend, but you could leave it out, or add in another powder of your choice. I find the spirulina powder is good because you don’t taste it in amongst all the other ingredients. It sort of just gives the smoothie bowl a nice plum colour.
As I said earlier, the great thing about this recipe is that you can add whatever you want. Especially with the toppings. If you’d rather put museli or nuts on the top, you can! You could also chop up some fresh fruit or berries for the top if you have them. If you are a crazy person, you could even leave the peanut butter off, but I wouldn’t recommend it because peanut butter is delicious!
This is a really healthy breakfast option both for the weekend but could easily be added in to your weekday routine. It is quite quick to make so you could easily whip one of these up before work if you have the time to eat it. I think it would make any Monday a bit brighter. I always feel so good after having one of these for breakfast, it’s always nice to have something healthy to start your day. This is also gluten and dairy free, so you can’t go wrong!
I love our new Saturday ritual. It gives us a chance to sit and catch up over breakfast, and is always a bit of fun for our Saturday morning. It also means that I’m not spending $16 on the equivalent in the café, so there is always that! Even though it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles, I promise you won’t feel like you are missing out on much eating one of these delicious smoothie bowls. It’s quite a fun process, and you really get to add whatever you feel like eating, rather than having to go with the one option on the menu. For something that is actually so simple to make, I can’t believe the prices that are being charged! Do yourself a favour, and try this one at home!
What’s your favourite type of smoothie bowl? I’m keen to try out some new flavours and experiment further!
Until next time, happy eating!
